On March 12, 2019 the PI member of the PIEZAGRO team presented three seminars for the forest stakeholder of the Herdade da Abegoria were several tasks of the project were performed. The workshop took place in the Institute Superior of Agronomy in Lisbon, were several other research teams also presented their results.

No dia 12 de março de 2019, a responsável do projeto PIEZAGRO apresentou três seminários ao proprietário florestal da Herdade da Abegoaria, uma propriedade que abriga varias parcelas experimentais. O evento teve lugar no Instituto Superior de Agronomia de Lisboa, num workshop em que varias equipas de investigação apresentaram resultados.

Here are results on climate changes in the Alentejo region of Portugal. The slide show presents the evolution of aridity in the region until 2100, according the the Euro-Cordex simulations under climate change scenarios RCP 4.5 and 8.5. Some of those results have been presented at the 3rd Agriculture and Climate Change Conference, hosted in Budapest, Hungary on March 26, 2019 [1].

Apresentamos aqui resultados sobre alterações climáticas na região Alentejana de Portugal. As diapositivas mostram a evolução da aridez na região até 2100, de acordo com as simulações da iniciativa Euro-Cordex nos cenários de mudanças climáticas RCP 4.5 e 8.5. Alguns desses resultados foram apresentados na 3ª Conferência sobre Agricultura e Mudanças Climáticas, realizada em Budapeste, Hungria, em 26 de março de 2019 [1].

Members of the PIEZAGRO team went to Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) in June 2018 to provide Cork oak samples and measure tree ring density with José Lousada and Armindo Gonçalves Teixeira of the Forestry Department (CITAB). Stone pine cores samples were also delivered, on which cross dating was performed by PIEZAGRO members according to caracteristic dry and moist years, under the supervision of José Lousada. Intra anual density fluctuation (IADF) was also registered on each of the 120 cores collected in 2017 for the project.

Os membros da equipa da PIEZAGRO foram para a Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) em junho de 2018 para fornecer amostras de sobreiros e medir a densidade dos anéis com o José Lousada e o Armindo Gonçalves Teixeira do Departamento Florestal (CITAB). A equipa também forneceu verrumadas de pinheiro-manso nos quais a datação cruzada foi realizada pelos membros do PIEZAGRO segundo anos característicos secos e húmidos, e sob a supervisão de José Lousada. A flutuação da densidade intra-anual (IADF) também foi registrada em cada uma das 120 verrumadas recolhidas em 2017 no ambito do projeto.

During summer 2017 we collected 210 samples of twigs, soil, groundwater and precipitation in two Stone pine stands for ¹⁸O stable isotopes analyses. The aim was to determine whether this tree species was relying on groundwater to cope with severe drought conditions of the Mediterranean climate. Samples were cryosdistilled in Instituto Superior de Agronomia and are being analyzed by mass spectrometry in FCUL (LIE-SIIAF ).

Durante o verão 2017 recolhemos cerca de 210 amostras de raminhos, solo, água freática e chuva em duas parcelas de pinheiro manso para analisar a composição isotópica em ¹⁸O. A mesma vai nos permitir saber se esta espécie depende da água profunda para sobreviver às secas extremas do clima Mediterrânico. As amostras foram criodistiladas no Instituto Superior de Agronomia e estão a ser analisadas na FCUL (LIE-SIIAF).

The extreme drought of 2017 made more victims in our beautiful evergreen oak woodlands. Hundreds of cork oak of various ages suddenly died at the end of the drought season on one of the heritages we studied. At least 15 of them did not die in vain, as they donated a large chunk of science to tell how they drank the drought of the Mediterranean climate throughout their lives. We will soon reveal your stories.

A seca extrema de 2017 fez mais vítimas no nosso lindo Montado. Centenas de árvores de várias idades morreram subitamente no início do outono 2017, numa das herdades que estudamos.  Ao menos 15 dentro delas não morreram em vão, pois doaram uma grande fatia do seu trunco à ciência para contar como aturaram o rigor das secas do clima Mediterrânico ao longo das suas vidas. Em breve revelaremos as suas histórias.

Orthophotography and Digial Surface Model,  Herdade da Abegoaria

Drone flights were performed  over Herdade da Abegoaria to obtain high resolution ortofografias and a Digital Surface Model (DSM). Those flights were realised in partnership with Waterways and a close collaboration with our IST partners, João Nascimento , Filipe Miguens and Andrea Giusti. The main goal was to provide the best topographical data to build an hydrological model to predict the impact of climate change on the local water balance and piezometric level.

Alguns vôos de drone foram realizados pela Herdade da Abegoaria para obter ortofografias de alta resolução e um figdedigno Modelo de Superfície Digital (DSM). Esses vôos foram realizados em parceria com a Waterways e uma estreita colaboração com nossos parceiros do IST, João Nascimento, Filipe Miguens e Andrea Giusti. O objetivo principal era de obter melhores dados topográficos para construir um modelo hidrológico com objectivo de prever o impacto das alterações climáticas no balanço hídrico local e no nível piezométrico.

The Union of the Mediterranean Forest (UNAC) held on March 7, 2018 a Workshop on “Adaptive Forest Management under Climate Change” for stakeholders of the agroforestry sector, at the Arts and Culture Center of Ponte de Sor, Portugal . The PIEZAGRO team was represented at the event by Rita Cardoso, who presented the forecasted climate changes for Portugal until 2100, according to updated climate scenarios (RCP 4.5 and 8.5). Cathy Kurz-Besson also talked about the importance of groundwater for the agroforestry sector in the xeric Alentejo region of Portugal. She also presented some techniques to improve water retention in forest exploitations to mitigate the impact of climate change on the local water balance.

A União da Floresta Mediterrânica (UNAC) realizou no dia 7 de Março,  o Workshop “Gestão Florestal Adaptativa em Alterações Climáticas” dedicado à produtores florestais, no Centro de Artes e Cultura de Ponte de Sor, Portugal. A equipa PIEZAGRO foi representada no evento pela Rita Cardoso, que apresentou as alterações climáticas previstas em Portugal até 2100 de acordo com cenários climáticos atualizados (RCP 4.5 e 8.5). A Cathy Kurz-Besson também falou da importância da água freática para o sector agroflorestal na região xerica do Alentejo, e apresentou algumas técnicas de retenção da água na exploração florestal para mitigar o impacte das alterações climáticas no balanço hídrico local.

Inês Marques well reprented the PIEZAGRO team by presenting her research at two congresses last summer 2017. She participated to the 4th International Conference on Ecohydrology, Soil and Climate Change in Figueira da Foz, Portugal (EcoHCC’2017,  21-23 de Setembro de 2017) and at the 8th Portuguese Congress of Forestry  (“Roots of the future”, October 11-14, 2017) in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. A Inês Marques representou a equipa PIEZAGRO em dois congresses no verão 2017, apresentando o seu trabaho no 4º congresso international  de Ecohidrologia, Solos e Alterações climáticas (EcoHCC’2017,  21-23 de Setembro de 2017) em Figueira da Foz e no 8º Congresso Nacional Florestal (“Raizes do Futuro”, 11-14 de Outubro de 2017) em Viana do Castelo.
